1949 Bentley MKVI

Registration - 886 PBP

Chassis No. - B252FV

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 36,315

Values of the MKVI Bentley have been on the rise for some years, but only very slowly, which is a puzzle to many enthusiasts bearing in mind the quality represented by good examples. ‘886 PBP’ would certainly seem to be a case in point. Restored in 2008-2011 at a cost of £40,000, it looks truly stunning in its eye catching livery of dark over light blue matched to a light grey leather interior. A matching numbers car, it is said by the vendor to be ‘as good underneath as it is above, with a bullet-proof 4.25-litre engine and servo-assisted brakes’. He confirms that the renovation included a bare metal respray, renovation of the woodwork, fabric and virtually everything mechanical, and now classes the Standard Steel bodywork, paintwork, interior trim, straight-six engine and four-speed manual gearbox as all being in ‘excellent’ order.

The Bentley was first registered on October 24, 1949 and supplied new to its first keeper by Jack Barclay Ltd. The vendor informs us that the accompanying documentation warrants the impressively low indicated mileage of 36,316, and confirms that this gorgeous specimen of a much admired model has recently been inspected and serviced. He is now offering it complete with sunroof, subtle conversion to flashing indicators and seat belts front and rear. A Bentley that would surely grace any classic collection.

Bentley’s MKVI was the first vehicle ever offered by the company with factory-designed coachwork, and the first to be assembled in Rolls-Royce’s Crewe factory rather than the old Derby premises. The rationalisation was a popular move in the pervading austerity and, of the 5,202 MKVIs produced, 4190 were clothed in the in-house body.

In summary:

  • Just 36,316 documented miles from new
  • The subject of a £40,000 restoration 10 years ago
  • Recently inspected and serviced
