  Lot 81

1968 Mini-Cooper S MK II

Chassis No. - KA256/1187474-A

Registration - YX 613

M.O.T. - EXEMPT

Odometer – 82,096

If you’re a Mini-Cooper fan searching for a restoration project, then your time has come. This delightfully unmolested one owner MKII example was purchased new in 1968 from the Automotive & General Equipment Company of Beirut by a Lebanese Airlines pilot. He had intended to buy a Jaguar, but on learning there was a six month waiting list came home with the Mini instead. Later in life he and the Cooper S emigrated to Cyprus where it was dry stored in an underground car park. It was there, hidden ‘under years of accumulated household material’, that what had been simply advertised as a ‘Mini’ was finally unearthed by the vendor, who purchased it and imported his lucky find to the UK. The shell is apparently completely original apart from a repaint at some stage in its original livery of black over Tartan Red. The lefthand drive Cooper S currently rides on wide-rimmed alloy wheels and sports twin fuel tanks, an Arcoll leather-rimed steering wheel, full-width wooden facia and pair of auxiliary driving lights. It apparently starts without problem and displays good oil pressure, plus a total mileage to date of 82,096 kilometres. ‘YX 613’ comes complete with Heritage Certificate and represents an increasingly rare restoration opportunity for Mini aficionados everywhere.

The first Mini-Cooper appeared in 1961, following a tie-up with champion F1 constructor John Cooper. The capacity of the standard engine was increased, while a close-ratio gearbox and front wheel disc brakes completed the package. The Mark II version launched in 1967 featured a redesigned grille, larger rear window and numerous cosmetic changes, 6,300 examples of which were fitted with the optional 1275cc engine.

In summary:

  • Remarkably original one-owner example
  • Dry stored in the warm climate of Cyprus for many years
  • Just 82,096 kilometres (51,310 miles) from new
