The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 81

1985 Ford Escort RS Turbo

Registration - C321 ANE

Chassis No. - WF0BXXGCABFU55606

M.O.T. - July 2022

Odometer - 73,000

‘C321 ANE’ was first registered on August 7, 1985. Like almost all the Escort MKIII Turbos, the sale car is finished Diamond White that’s teamed with a blue-piped grey cloth interior (in Ford speak a mix of Monza and Cachmere fabric), while the Ford rides on period-correct seven-spoke alloy wheels as previously found on the limited edition RS1600i. The vendor describes the RS as ‘a clean, presentable and usable car’, though volunteers it would now benefit from a repaint and ‘a repair to the cracked facia’. Overall he grades the turbo engine, five-speed transmission and upholstery as ‘good’ and the bodywork and paintwork as ‘average’. The odometer currently displays an unwarranted but credible 73,000 miles.

Debuted in October 1984, the RS Turbo went on sale in the spring of the following year. The initial plan was to build the 5,000 examples required for Group A homologation, however, following better than expected demand a total of 8,604 were eventually created, 5,000 of which were reserved for the UK market. Only available from Rallye Sport dealers from spring to December 1985, they featured: the aforementioned alloy wheels; coloured-keyed radiator grille, mirrors and bumpers; XR3i rear spoiler; Recaro LS bucket seat; and a viscous-coupling limited-slip differential. One example was finished in black rather than white – a special build for Diana, Princess of Wales. Power for the model came courtesy of a 1597cc version of the company’s CVH engine force fed by a Garret AiResearch T3 turbocharger. The resulting peak output was 132bhp at 6,000 rpm – sufficient for the Escort to achieve the 0-60mph sprint in 7.8 seconds and 128mph flat out.

In summary:

  • An apparently tidy, unmolested example
  • One of only 5,000 examples sold on the UK market
  • Comes complete with optional sunroof
