  Lot 81

1987 Ford Capri 1.6 Laser - 2.0S Tribute

Registration - D366 WCX

Chassis No. - WF0CXXGAECGA98758

M.O.T. - November 2023

Odometer - 79,546

This interesting take on the ‘The Car You Always Promised Yourself’ started life as a 1.6-litre Laser. It was treated to a respray in its original colour of red in 2016 and then remained unused until acquired by the vendor (its fourth keeper) in November last year. He has subsequently invested a fair degree of time and money refurbishing the Capri and turning it into a replica of the 2.0S model, and an inventory of the parts purchased form part of the sale. They include: radiator; 32/36 Weber carburettor and manifold; timing belt; gasket; points; plugs; instruments; brakes and brake lines; ball joints and control arms; radio, and a reconditioned starter motor. To ensure the authentic 2.0S look he has installed the correct grey strobe interior trim and red instrument surrounds etc, but curtailed the project before fitting a 2.0-litre Pinto engine in place of the existing 1.6–litre unit as originally intended. He believes the indicated total mileage of 79,546 to be genuine, and currently grades the four-cylinder engine and five-speed manual gearbox as ‘good’, and the bodywork, paintwork and upholstery as ‘average’. He is now selling the Capri complete with sunroof, radio/CD player, an as yet unfitted telescopic radio aerial, pair of keys, receipts and photographs relating to the work carried out, plus a current MOT valid to November 16 and several boxes of spare parts.

From November 1984 onwards Capri sales were limited to the UK only, with normally aspirated 1.6 and 2.0 litre versions rebranded as Lasers.

They featured fully-populated instrument pods, leather-covered steering wheel, leather gearlever gaiter, S-type four-spoke alloy wheels, and colour-coded grille and mirrors. Production of Europe’s unexpectedly successful version of the American ‘pony car’ finally ceased in December 1986.

In summary:

  • A 1.6 Laser model converted to look like a 2.0S Capri
  • Resprayed in 2016 and the recent recipient of numerous new parts
  • Four owners and 79,546 miles from new
