  Lot 82

1970 VW Beach Buggy SWB
***NO RESERVE***

Chassis No. - 3321021

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 5,599

The vendor describes this unique classic as a proper ‘70s Buggy. It was built on a 1960s Beetle SWB floorpan in 1970, with king and link pin beam, and narrow-axle gearbox – “this allows the fitment of the huge rear wheels in true early Beetle 205 stud pattern”. The 1,500cc single port engine has two 34 ICT carburettors and a ‘big buggy’ cannon exhaust. ‘FLN330J’ is an EPC Hustler, a small Essex-based firm that used to specialise in Beach Buggys. The side fairings mark it out as a Hustler, of which only around 350 were believed to be built. Today, there is a strong community around Hustlers, with plentiful online support from fellow enthusiasts. This car is described as being in ‘good’ condition throughout, with an ‘excellent’ transmission.

‘FLN330J’ had been stood for a while when they acquired it, but the vendor says they gave it a thorough mechanical inspection, making sure the brakes, suspension and steering are all now in good working order. They’ve owned it for a few years and say they’ve had a couple of fun summers with it: “The car always starts and runs perfectly… it’s loud and gets you noticed!” They’ve never been out in the wet with it, and add that it doesn’t come with any weather gear, “but who wants to use this in the winter…”. A tax-exempt, MOT-exempt classic with all-Beetle running gear and brakes, this is classic motoring in its rawest and most attainable form. “I’m only looking to get back what I put into it,” adds the vendor, “as I have now replaced it with a classic Porsche – which is very much at the other end of the scale…”.

· Rare EPC Hustler Volkswagen Beach Buggy
