  Lot 82

1988 Ford Escort RS Turbo

Registration - A20 GJB

Chassis No. - WF0BXXGCABJD14945

M.O.T. - December 2023

Odometer - 90,014

This seemingly very original Turbo S2 complete with full body kit has recently been awoken from no less than 24 years of slumber. It is a five-owner example that has remained within the current ownership for 29 years all told and, though it’s clearly been driven relatively little in that time, has amassed at total of 90,924 miles to date. The vendor confirms that the RS runs and drives, and presently grades the engine and five-speed manual transmission as ‘good’, and the bodywork, white paintwork and grey interior trim as ‘average’. He is now offering this pleasingly unmolested fast Ford complete with its original service book, owner’s manual and a large assortment of maintenance invoices and old MOTs, plus a current one that remains valid until December 8. A rare opportunity.

Debuted in October 1984, the MK3 Escort-based Series 1 RS Turbo went on sale the following spring. The initial plan was to build the 5,000 required for Group A homologation. However, following better than expected demand, a total of 8,604 were eventually created, 5,000 of which were reserved for the UK market. Power for the model came courtesy of a 1597cc version of the company’s CVH engine, force fed by a Garrett AiResearch T3 turbocharger. The resulting peak output was 132bhp at 6,000rpm – sufficient to achieve the 0-60mph sprint in 7.8 seconds and 128mph flat out. The MK4 Escort-based Series 2 RS Turbo appeared in 1986 and continued in manufacture until 1990. It was a series production model rather than a homologation special, and therefore produced in a choice of colours (S1 cars were all white except for three special orders in black). Total production was c.22,108 units.

In summary:

  • Has remained in the current ownership for 29 years
  • Has been dry stored for all but five of those years
  • A very original example complete with full body kit

NB The Escort currently wears the cherished number ‘A20 GJB’. Its original registration was ‘F229 HUF’
