The Gold Cup Classic & Performance Car & Motorcycle Auction

  Lot 83

1978 Ford Escort RS Mexico
Featured in Classic Ford Magazine

Registration - PMS 533T

Chassis No. - BBATUB75535

M.O.T. - September 2023

Odometer - 88,410

Here we have a much uprated Mexico that’s remained in its current ownership for the last seven and half years, is apparently well-known within the RS fraternity, and was the subject of a four-page feature in the August 2015 edition of Classic Ford magazine. It is finished in the popular colour of Venetian Red that’s matched to black cloth interior trim, while the Ford rides on a set of Yokohama A539-shod Ronal 7x13 four-spoke RS alloy wheels. Outward upgrades include a quartet of Cibié Ocar spotlights, rare RS Owners Club sun strip, and RS mudflaps all-round. Lurking under the bonnet is a 2-litre Pinto engine rather than 1.6-litre original, and a modified one at that. It’s been treated to a Burton stage-3 cylinder head, Kent FR32 camshaft, pair of 40 DHLA Dellorto carburettors, oil breather, a 4-2-1 manifold and large-bore twin-box exhaust system, and Airtec high capacity alloy radiator – the net result is a purposeful powerplant delivering 142bhp at the wheels. The unit drives through a Type 9 five-speed gearbox to a 3J Driveline NXG plate-type limited slip differential. The suspension features coil overs at the front, Gartrac de-cambered springs and Bilstein dampers at the rear, and poly bushes all round. Other mods include a quick steering rack and braking courtesy of M16 spaced calipers, vented/grooved front discs with EBC pads, and a larger master cylinder. The interior has been upgraded with a trio of console-mounted auxiliary gauges.

One of the Escort’s most memorable early competition wins was Hannu Mikkola’s victory on the 1970 London to Mexico World Cup Rally, to capitalise on which Ford created the limited edition, AVO-built Escort Mexico in time for the 1971 season. Its specially strengthened shell was fitted with Rallye Sport suspension and brakes and powered by a 1.6-litre ‘Kent’ engine. Introduced in 1974, the squarer-shaped MKII version had a 1.6-litre Pinto engine in place of the Kent unit.

In summary:

  • ‘PMS 533T’ benefits from a host of mechanical upgrades
  • In current ownership for 7.5 years and enjoyed on tours at home and abroad
  • Comes with comprehensive history file and MOT to September 17
