An Auction of Classic and Performance Cars and Motorcycles

  Lot 83

1988 BMW 635 CSi
In current ownership for 22 years

Registration - E24 BKJ

Chassis No. - WBAEC820X08188078

M.O.T. - April 2024

Odometer - 81,642

This well presented Highline model matches Citrus Metallic Blue bodywork with beige leather interior trim and rides on a set of Alpina alloy wheels. Its six keepers have travelled a total of 81,42 miles between them. We understand that within the last three years some £12,500 has been invested in having a new floor installed by Wren Classics of Dorset and both fuel and brake lines replaced, while the model-appropriate ‘E24’ registration has apparently been on the BMW since new. The vendor has retained the 635 for the last 22 years and currently regards the straight-six engine, automatic transmission and coupe bodywork as all being in ‘good’ condition, and the upholstery as ‘average’ for the car’s age and mileage. He is now offering it complete with factory-fitted sunroof, Sony CD/radio, operating manuals, history file and a current MOT valid for 12 months.

The sleek, Paul Bracq-penned, four-seat 6 Series coupe was introduced in 1976 as a replacement for the aging CS and CSL models. Code named E24, the newcomer borrowed heavily from the contemporary E12 and E28

5 Series saloons and was of unitary, all steel construction. The more powerful 635 CSi swelled the line-up in 1978. It was equipped with a SOHC 3,453cc straight-six engine, and standard equipment included a five-speed manual gearbox and a boot lid-mounted spoiler. Suspension was fully independent by semi-trailing arms and coil springs, braking by ventilated discs all round, and steering by a ZF worm and roller system. In 1982 the model enjoyed a mild facelift, with improved interior and slightly modified exterior. Coincidentally, the range-topping 635 CSi received a new engine of smaller bore and longer stroke, resulting in a capacity of 3,430cc. This was mated to either a five-speed manual or automatic transmission. The power and torque remained unchanged at 218bhp and 224 lb ft respectively – sufficient to accelerate the big BMW to 60mph in around 7.6secs and on to a top speed of 140mph. Production ceased in 1989 after some 86,216 examples had been produced.

In summary:

  • A tidily-presented six-keeper, 81,642-mile Highline example
  • Recently benefited from a new floor and brake and fuel lines
  • Comes complete with model-appropriate ‘E24’ number plate
