The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 83

1998 Land Rover Discovery 1

Registration - R534 0AB

Chassis No. - SALLJGBF7WA779813

M.O.T. - March 2022

Odometer - 142,000

Good Discoverys of all generations are keenly sought these days and this very tidy-looking three-door, seven-seat, first generation example is certainly an attractive proposition. Its lustrous metallic blue paintwork is complemented by an apparently spotless grey half leather interior – the vendor informs us that the Disco has never been off-roaded, and its overall condition bears testament to that claim. The vehicle is powered by Land Rover’s proven 300 Tdi 2.5-litre diesel engine that’s coupled to a five-speed manual gearbox. Five keepers, including a lady who retained the vehicle for 11 years, have amassed a total indicated mileage of 142,000, but there is proof of plenty of maintenance too. For example, the body has benefited from new sills and refurbished inner front wings, boot floor and body mounts. The cam belt was replaced at 120,000 miles and a reconditioned cylinder head installed at 137,000. The current keeper has used ‘R534 OAB’ for a number of trouble-free journeys to and from Scotland, but is now offering it for sale complete with tow pack, its original electric windows and Land Rover radio-cassette, new rails for the factory-fitted roof bars, a phone charger point in place of the cigarette lighter, service book confirming some Land Rover dealer service history, a pair of keys, and a current MOT valid to March 29 next year.

Introduced in 1989, the Discovery 1 was based on the Range Rover of the time and featured the same chassis, suspension and proven four-wheel drive system but, courtesy of a range of smaller engines and other cost reductions, it was aimed at a broader more middle-class market. At launch it was offered in just three-door guise.

In summary:

  • A very tidy example that’s never been off-roaded
  • Versatile seven-seat model
  • The subject of recent refurbishment and maintenance
