The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 84

1977 Jaguar XJ-C 4.2

Registration - WGT 802R

Chassis No. - 2J2922BW

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 64,251

Jaguar’s pillarless XJ6 Coupe is perennially admired for its notably graceful lines. Sadly, many have been lost to corrosion over the years, which is the Achilles heel of the model. It is therefore good news that the vendor of ‘WGT 802R’ declares it to be ‘rust-free’. First registered in May 1977, it is both finished and trimmed in black and is notable for its full length sunroof. The vendor presently classes the 4.2-litre XK engine, automatic transmission, bodywork and paintwork as ‘good’ and the upholstery as ‘average’. The Jaguar has apparently been stored in recent times, though serviced by the vendor since acquiring it earlier this year. He is now offering the coupe complete with its 18-stamp service book (the last entry was dated September 2014), original handbook and a selection of receipts.

Jaguar’s original XJ Saloon (retrospectively dubbed the Series 1) and its Daimler counterparts were introduced in 1968 and were the last models to have the personal input of Jaguar’s founder, Sir William Lyons. The striking two-door pillarless coupe derivative was first shown five years later, at the 1973 London Motor Show. Production was heavily delayed, however, and did not get fully underway until 1975. The newcomer was based on the short wheelbase saloon and featured suitably lengthened versions of the standard car’s doors. There were two engine options – a 4.2-litre version of the ubiquitous DOHC XK unit and the 5.3-litre V12 one. The smaller-engined version came with the choice of manual or automatic gearbox. The silky smooth suspension was independent all round, braking by discs at each corner, and steering by rack and pinion. A total of 10,426 Jaguar and Daimler coupes were produced before production ceased in 1978 – 8,214 sported the 4.2-litre engine.

In summary:

  • Comes complete with full length sunroof
  • The body is said to be rust free
  • Stored in recent times
