November 2021 Classics Auction

  Lot 85

1928 Austin 16 Light Six
A truly exceptional example.

Registration - SV 6668

Chassis No. - 1865L6

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 96,279

We have very little information on this truly splendid vintage saloon, other than it has remained within its current ownership for the last four years, and that the vendor presently regards the four-door coachwork, black over maroon paintwork, red leatherette interior trim, six-cylinder engine and manual transmission as all being in ‘excellent’ order. It retains such key period features as the steering wheel-mounted ignition and choke controls, cabin-mounted fuel filler, luggage rack, and artillery wheels. Though there is no supporting history, the current indicated mileage of 96,279 has every likelihood of being correct. The vendor informs as that ‘SV 6668’ ‘runs ‘superbly and is therefore ready to be enjoyed by its next keeper’.

Austin’s 16 model enjoyed a decade of production. Introduced in 1927, it was a medium-sized saloon whose position within the logical Austin range was above the Seven and Twelve but below the Twenty. It was powered by a newly evolved straight six side-valve engine of 2249cc. As per the growing trend, the four-speed manual transmission was mounted in-unit with the powerplant, while the suspension was by semi-elliptic springs all-round. The model was continually developed throughout its reign, gaining synchromesh on the top two gears in 1934, and even being offered with an early type of automatic gearbox for a short while, though few such examples were sold. The power output was 36bhp at 2,400 rpm – sufficient to propel the Austin to a top speed of 60mph and return an overall fuel consumption of around 21mpg, depending on the type of body fitted.

In summary:

  • Arguably about as good an example of the breed as you’ll find
  • Self-evidently the subject of comprehensive restoration to original specification
  • Currently displays a very credible 96,279 miles from new
