The Big End of Year Auction at Bolesworth Castle, Cheshire

  Lot 85

1953 Bedford K Type Bus
Example full of charm and believed to be one of only two remaining

Registration – PFF 777

Chassis No. – KZ232395

M.O.T. – TBC

Odometer – 70,415

Affectionately known as “Fordy”, this charming 9-seater is said by the vendor to be in good working order and presents beautifully following a comprehensive restoration completed in 2018. Finished in green and cream with period Rotol Propellers signage, the vehicle carries a wonderfully authentic presence. Recent works include a service, brake rebuild, two new tyres, new drop windows in both doors and a new old-stock temperature/fuel gauge. The vendor also informs us that all electrics are functioning correctly.

The bodywork is by Spurling Motor Bodies of London, and the bus was supplied new to Rotol Airscrews of Cheltenham, adding further interest to its history. Believed to be one of only two Bedford K-Type buses remaining in the UK, this example stands out as both rare and historically significant.

Introduced prior to the Second World War, the Bedford K-Type served as a light-duty bus and coach chassis, but production halted abruptly at the outbreak of the war as Bedford diverted its efforts to military transport. Post-war production resumed briefly until 1953, after which the model was replaced by the A-Type—the forerunner to the later D-Type and J-Type. Surviving examples are now highly prized by collectors of British commercial vehicles.

  • Fully restored in 2018 with recent mechanical and electrical works

  • Believed to be one of only two K-Type buses remaining in the UK

  • Supplied new to Rotol Airscrews, Cheltenham, with Spurling bodywork
