  Lot 86

1948 Packard Sedan Touring

Registration - 164 XUT

Chassis No. - 22822016

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 31,800

This truly stunning righthand drive 22 Series Packard has had only two owners from new and driven just 31,800 miles in its life to date. It was delivered new to South Africa and spent its first 33 years in that country, Rhodesia and Ghana before being shipped to the UK. It then remained unused for a further 28 years before being restored between 2009 and 2012 by a Wetherby-based architect at a cost of over £30,000. The bodywork is now resplendent in white over blue and the immaculate interior trimmed in a complementary paler shade of blue. The vendor has no hesitation in claiming this ‘show condition’ motorcar as having ‘excellent’ bodywork, paintwork, interior trim, 4.0-litre straight-six engine and four-speed manual transmission, and further describes the bodywork as a ‘beautiful shiny blue’, the powerplant as ‘silky smooth’, and suggests ‘164 XUT’ is probably the best preserved example of the model in the UK’. He is now offering this lovely slice of Americana complete with a pair of auxiliary driving lights and three volumes of history. A unique opportunity.

Dating back to 1899, Packard was one of the earliest of the American motor manufacturers, and was reputedly founded by James Ward Packard because he was convinced he could build a better car than the Winton he had just bought. Though his company was taken over just three years later, it nevertheless survived until 1958 and was arguably the USA’s premier luxury producer in the ‘30s. The introduction of a new six-cylinder engine boosted 1937 production to an all-time high of 109,516. Then, with WWII behind it, Packard entered 1948 with a completely restyled range.

In summary:

  • A stunning example of the breed
  • Just two owners and 31,800 miles from new
  • Just 1,000 miles covered since a £30,000 restoration
