The Gold Cup Classic & Performance Car & Motorcycle Auction

  Lot 88

1995 Mazda Efini RX7 Type R FD
In current ownership for 16 years

Registration - M872 BHG

Chassis No. - FD35303996

M.O.T. - June 2024

Odometer - 117,000 kilometres (72,700 miles)

Only 210 FD model RX7s were officially imported to the UK but, no doubt encouraged by its starring role in the hit movie franchise Fast & Furious, fans have subsequently imported a number of JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) versions, of which ‘M872 BHG’ is a notably handsome example. It was brought into the country by the vendor and first UK registered in March 2007, so has only had the one keeper in the last 16 years. After adding 1,200 kilometres to the existing mileage he then placed the Mazda in storage until 2021, at which point it was given a major mechanical overhaul by rotary-engined car specialists Rotor Torque, of Raleigh, Essex. The engine (including both turbos) was completely rebuilt, an A’PEXi Power FC ecu installed and full remap carried out, while the springs, dampers, brake discs, calipers and pads were all renewed, along with the clutch slave cylinder, fuel pump, battery, badges and number plates – a stainless steel sports exhaust and free-flow air filters were also installed. This work was followed by a comprehensive restoration of the body, during which it was totally stripped and then repainted in its original shade of red. Finally, the Mazda was completely valeted and the paintwork treated to a full coating of ceramic wax. The vendor now considers the engine, five-speed manual transmission, bodywork, paintwork and black suede upholstery to all be in ‘excellent’ condition, and is offering the RX7 complete with Bose Wave sound system and 70-page history file that includes invoices for work done, photos of the restoration and a current MOT valid into June 2024. The car has covered 2,300 kilometres since completion of all the work, so the engine is run in. This has brought the indicated total mileage to 117,000 kilometres (c.72,700 miles).

The third (FD) and final incarnation of the RX7 was launched in 1992. It featured an updated body design of softer lines, but the key point of note was its engine’s sequential twin-turbocharger system that was developed in conjunction with Hitachi. This raised the output of the twin rotor powerplant to a very respectable 255bhp.

In summary:

  • A fine-looking JDM example first UK registered in 2007
  • Treated to a comprehensive restoration just 2,300km ago
  • Comes with 70-page history file and a year’s MOT
