1952 MG TD MK II

Registration - 713 YUA

Chassis No. - TDC11963

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 10,150

This decidedly handsome lefthand drive TD features cream paintwork teamed with green interior trim. As the vendor rightly points out, the TD is a model that combined the charm of the pre-war T-Type MGs with the with the benefits of a more modern chassis. Being a MKII, or ‘Competition’ example, ‘713 YUA’ also benefits from superior power and handling than the standard car (see below for more detail), plus a full Peter Edney engine rebuild including hardened valve seats etc, and a five-speed gearbox conversion. The vendor considers the car to be ‘very pretty, fun to drive and to run and pull well’. It has been professionally serviced and is now offered complete with its original four-speed gearbox.

The first post-war MG was the TC. It bore great similarity to the pre-war TB and was fitted with basically the same 1,250 cc OHV XPAG engine. It was superseded by the TD in 1950 which, though visually similar to the earlier cars, was built around a more modern chassis derived for the Y-Type Saloon. The benefits included coil spring suspension at the front, rack and pinion steering, smaller 15-inch disc-type wheels and the option of LHD. The newcomer also boasted a hypoid bevel axle, hidden scuttle hoop, twin leading-shoe front brakes, and was five inches wider than its predecessor. The MKII version was produced alongside the standard car and featured a range of optional upgrades including: an engine of 8.0:1 compression ratio giving 57bhp, twin fuel pumps, revised dampers, and higher final drive ratio. Some 30,000 TDs had been produced by the time the model was superseded by the TF in 1953.

In summary:

  • One of only 1,710 MKII TDs produced, so a rare survivor
  • Features a Peter Edney engine rebuild and 5-speed gearbox
  • A very handsome lefthand drive example
