The Gold Cup Classic & Performance Car & Motorcycle Auction

  Lot 89

1994 Toyota MR2 Turbo

Registraion - L55 HOS

Chassis No. - SW200092435

M.O.T. - May 2024

Odometer - 91,401

Every now and again you encounter a car that looks fast even when its standing stock still, and this is surely one of them. It’s a 1994 JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) MR2 Turbo that was imported and first UK registered in February 2005, since when it’s had a total of nine keepers, the most recent of whom has owned the Toyota since March last year. It is equipped with the Revision 3 engine, which means that there is no less than 242bhp on tap. The car’s very attractive metallic blue paintwork is complemented by black leather interior trim and a set of five-spoke split-rims Rays alloy wheels that are shod with new Avon tyres. The vendor currently classes the turbo engine, five-speed manual gearbox and upholstery as ‘excellent’, and the T-top bodywork and paintwork as ‘good’. He is now selling the MR2 complete with boost gauge, Sony radio/CD player and a selection old MOTs, plus a current one valid to May 23 next year. ‘L55 HOS’ was declared a Category D insurance write-off in 2015 following light damage to the front end, but the vendor assures us it was repaired to ‘a very high standard’.

The original mid-engined two-seater MR2 (it stood for Midship Runabout Two-Seater) was an unexpected offering from Toyota – a manufacturer previously noted for its practical but very conventional family cars.

The second generation model was introduced in 1989 and rolled out around the world over the ensuing two years. It was a very different looking car. Gone were the angular lines of the inaugural model to be replaced by softer flowing ones more akin to the Pininfarina-styled Ferrari 348 and F355. The newcomer was larger all over than its predecessor and therefore heavier too – by some 375 pounds. The potential effect on performance was countered by the replacement of the 1.6-litre engine with a 2.0-litre one.

In summary:

  • A very smart and fast JMD example, imported in 2005
  • Equipped with Rev.3 242bhp engine and split rim alloys
  • Declared a Category D Insurance write-off in 2015
