November 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 9

1931 Armstrong Siddeley 12/6

Registration - KX 6431

Chassis No. - TBC

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - TBC

According to its accompanying paperwork, this charming six-light 12/6 Armstrong saloon was first registered to a Henry Dagworthy of Honiton in Devon on February 13, 1931. In recent times it has been resprayed in its original livery of blue over black and treated to an engine rebuild, radiator re-core and five new tyres. The vendor now describes the bodywork as ‘sound’, the blue vinyl interior trim as ‘original but tired’ and the pre-selector transmission as ‘working perfectly’. In summary he currently grades the engine, gearbox and bodywork as ‘excellent’, the paintwork as ‘good’ and the upholstery as ‘average’, but volunteers that neither the windscreen wiper nor interior light are presently in working order. He is now offering this rare 12/6 complete with opening windscreen, luggage rack, sphinx radiator mascot, original buff log book and history file containing a selection of invoices, including that for the 2021 engine rebuild by TRC of Huntly, Aberdeenshire. A highly usable pre-war classic begging to be enjoyed.

Armstrong’s 12/6 model was in production from 1928 to 1935, during which time a total of 12,500 examples were created. At launch it was powered by a 1236cc side-valve engine that was notable for being the smallest six-cylinder unit on the UK market. The sale car is one of 7,750 MKII versions which benefited from a slightly enlarged 1434cc derivative of the powerplant linked to a three-speed pre-selector gearbox. Autocar described the 12/6 as having “no pretensions to sports car performance”, and it’s true that the top speed lay somewhere short of 60mph, but at c.30mpg the fuel consumption compared well with that of the period’s rival offerings.

In summary:

  • Recently resprayed in the original livery of blue over black
  • Treated to five new tyres in 2019 and an engine rebuild in 2021
  • Comes with its original log book and sphinx radiator mascot
