May 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 9

1964 MGB Roadster
A desirable pull-handle model

Registration - CBL 433B

Chassis No. - GHN344588

M.O.T. - October 2023

Odometer - 3,834

Early examples of the MGB, known to collectors as ‘pull handle’ cars thanks to their distinctive ‘pull-to-open’ door handles, are increasingly sought after by collectors. This striking Iris Blue roadster, with white-piped black leather interior trim, is just such a car. Being first registered in August 1964 it is likely to have begun life with a three-bearing engine, but these days combines the relative rarity and purer styling of the MK1 cars with an example of the more desirable five-bearing unit, which became standard fit from October 1964 onwards. The vendor states that the powerplant in question was rebuilt six years ago and has since covered less than 4,000 miles. The sensible addition of electronic ignition should also benefit the new owner and, complete with desirable overdrive gearbox, this pretty two-seater makes for an ideal touring classic. Coincident with the engine rebuild, ‘CBL 433B’ was treated to a nut and bolt restoration, and still presents well to this day. Featuring its original interior and a packaway hood in apparently ‘as new’ condition, the car could either be enjoyed as it is, or further improved with a few light touches to the paintwork. With just five recorded keepers from new, an advisory-free MOT certificate and a realistic sales estimate, the car represents what should hopefully be years of trouble-free classic British motoring.

The MG of old was one of the quintessentially British sports car brands, and the MGB its longest-lived and best-selling model. Sharply styled and endowed with peppy performance and safe but engaging handling, it notched up over half a million sales between 1962 and 1980, when production was abruptly terminated and the historic Abingdon plant controversially closed for good.

In summary:

  • Desirable combination of ‘pull-handle’ body and five-bearing engine
  • The subject of a nut and bolt restoration six years ago
  • Specification includes overdrive and electronic ignition
