1970 Triumph Bonneville T120

This extremely smart, matching numbers Bonnie was exported new to the East Coast of the USA in 1970 and remained there until 2017, at which point it was repatriated in a very sorry state, having stood unused outside for 10 years. The vendor, an experienced engineer, purchased the Triumph in June 2019 and set about a total nut and bolt restoration. The good news was that the stripped engine showed very little sign of wear, and the bike is thought to have covered a maximum of 5,000-6000 miles from new. Lots of new parts were employed for the rebuild and included: piston rings, valves and springs, big end and main bearings, clutch plates, primary chain and adjuster slipper, fork stanchions and seals, rear dampers, wheels bearings, wiring harness, gel battery, chrome headlamp shell, instruments, cables and all seals and bearings.

In addition, the brakes and pair of Amal carburettors were refurbished and a brand new old stock petrol tank in period Tiger Gold/Black paint scheme acquired and fitted. The vendor now unsurprisingly regards the frame, paintwork, twin-cylinder engine and four-speed gearbox to all be in ‘excellent’ condition and believes the only remaining tasks are to get the horn working and acquire and fit the rubber and chrome finishing strips required for the seat. A fine-looking, low mileage machine that would surely grace any motorcycle collection.

Named after the famous salt flats of Utah, the Bonneville line has so far comprised three generations of parallel-twin four-stroke motorcycles. Always popular in the USA, the 650cc T120 racked up no less than 28,000 sales there in 1967, its peak year.
