The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 9

1991 Jaguar XJ12
*** NO RESERVE ***

Registration - Currently on IOM plate, which will not accompany the car

Chassis No. - SAJJHALS3AR691803

M.O.T. - N/A

Odometer - 80,833

This attractive big cat was first registered on the UK mainland in November 1993. It has had just three keepers to date, one of which was apparently Shell. We understand that the car has resided on the Isle of Man from new, and records confirm that it has worn the local registration ‘300 XMN’ since September 1999. This will now be withdrawn and the vendor will arrange for the Jaguar to revert to a UK plate following the sale. Its aubergine bodywork is matched to cream leather interior trim, and grey carpets and the vendor’s overall opinion of the car is that the V12 engine and automatic transmission are in ‘excellent’ order, the bodywork and upholstery in ‘good’ shape, and the paintwork in ‘average’ condition. He does, however, add that the suspension would now benefit from some attention. The odometer currently displays an unwarranted but credible 80,833 miles from new.

Following numerous delays, the second generation Jaguar XJ6 (or XJ40 to use its code name) and its Daimler counterparts were introduced in October 1986. The newcomer was the product of a £200,000 million investment and an astonishing 4,890,000 miles of testing in Arizona, Canada, Australia and around the Nardo test track, Italy – a record level of commitment for a Jaguar at that time. At this stage the line-up didn’t include a 12-cylinder option, however – the engine bay apparently being too narrow to house a unit of V configuration. Ford set about solving the problem when it took over Jaguar-Daimler in 1989, and the new 6-litre V12 cars (code name XJ81) finally came to market in 1993. The engines were mated to the equally new GM 4L80E four-speed automatic transmission.

In summary:

  • Just three owners and 80,833 miles from new
  • Domiciled on the Isle of Man from birth
  • The suspension is understood to require some attention
