An Auction of Classic and Performance Cars and Motorcycles

  Lot 91

1986 Porsche 924 S

Registration - D342 NGD

Chassis No. - WP0ZZZ92ZHN400183

M.O.T. - April 2024

Odometer - 28,000

Once treated as something of an outsider by Porsche aficionados, the 924 has become an increasingly sought-after member of the family, and ‘D342 NGD’ should certainly now stir some interest, being a genuine 28,000-mile three-owner example. Its pleasing gold paintwork is teamed with well cared-for brown striped fabric upholstery, while the car rides on apparently unmarked period correct alloy wheels shod with ‘good’ tyres. It was apparently off the road for many years, hence the low mileage – the 3,000 miles reading on the odometer is the result of a documented change of speedometer in 2007, at which time the total mileage stood at 25,000. We understand that over £1,000 has recently been invested on having the fuel tank removed, repaired, relined and refitted. The vendor presently grades the automatic transmission and interior trim as ‘excellent’, the four-cylinder engine as ‘good’, and the two-door bodywork and paintwork as ‘average’. The car’s now being sold complete with factory-fitted sunroof, Panasonic radio/cassette player, its original handbooks and bill of sale, the service book with three stamps from the its early years and a selection of receipts and old MOTs, plus a current one valid to April 17 next year.

The 924 served as Porsche’s entry-level model from 1976 to 1988 and effectively supplanted both the mid-engined 914 and the 912. It was the first Porsche to be powered by a water-cooled, front-mounted engine and the first to be offered with a fully automatic transmission. A joint venture with VAG, it was penned by Porsche designer Harm Lagaay and built by Volkswagen employees at the former NSU factory in Neckarsulm. By 1984 Volkswagen had decided to cease manufacture of the blocks for the 924 engine. Porsche’s solution was to install a slightly detuned version of the 2.5-litre unit from its 944 and so the 150bhp 924S was born. Barely slower than the 924 Turbo and slightly quicker than the base model 944, the S proved very popular on both sides of the Atlantic, and some 33,338 examples were eventually produced.

In summary:

  • A genuine 28,000-mile three-owner example
  • A seemingly very genuine car that could easily be further improved
  • Comes with sunroof, radio-cassette and a current MOT
