Lot 92

1962 Triumph TR4

Registration - 98 YKX

Chassis No. - CT101690

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 2,075

The vendor unearthed this apparently very largely original TR around 18 months ago from a garage where it had lain unused for many years, and is believed by him to perhaps be ‘the most original usable TR4 currently available’. As part of the recommissioning process, new brake discs, calipers, pads, shoes, wheels cylinders, master cylinder and flexible hoses were all replaced, as was the radiator hoses, exhaust system (which is now of the stainless steel variety), and clutch master and slave cylinder. Various rubber seals were also renewed. The vendor feels the photos make the paintwork look better than it is, and volunteers that the surface suffers from and number of chips and a degree of surface corrosion. The interior on the other hand is apparently totally original and, in the vendor’s opinion, is ‘in exceptional condition for a car that is nearly 60 years old’. Interestingly, ’98 YKX’ is fitted with the optional rear seat and still rides on original steel wheels shod with R15 tyres. The Triumph is finished in red and trimmed in white-piped black vinyl and comes complete with overdrive, plus the car’s original Surrey top. An interesting classic that could be run as it is or treated to a repaint.

Though based on the chassis and drivetrain of the TR3A, the TR4 cut a more modern dash, thanks to an all-new Michelotti-styled body. Engine capacity was now 2,138 cc and other mechanical updates included a wider track front and rear, rack and pinion steering, and an all-synchromesh gearbox. A total of 40,253 TR4s were manufactured between 1961 and January 1965.

In summary:

  • A very largely original surrey-topped TR
  • Equipped with the optional rear seat
  • Benefits from having been thoroughly Waxoyled
