An Auction of Classic and Performance Cars and Motorcycles

  Lot 92

1990 Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet

Registration - HIG 9442

Chassis No. - WPOZZZ94ZLN430541

M.O.T. - September 2023

Odometer - 124,685

This handsome cabriolet had had seven keepers from new, the most recent of whom sadly passed away after eight years of cherished ownership. He was apparently a lover of classic cars and certainly appears to have maintained the Porsche in good order. Its metallic grey bodywork is matched to a black hood and cream leather interior trim, and the 944 rides on apparently unmarked, period-correct alloy wheels shod with Goodyear tyres all-round. The vendor presently classes the DOHC four-cylinder engine and manual five-speed gearbox as ‘excellent, and the convertible bodywork, paintwork and interior trim as ‘good’. The car is now being offered complete with Blaupunkt radio/CD player, the model-related cherished number ‘HIG 9442’, handbook, history file of receipts etc, plus a current MOT valid into September. The odometer currently registers a total of 124,685 miles.

Introduced in 1982, Porsche’s front-engined, rear-wheel drive 944 was a direct development of the 924. The company replaced the latter’s Audi engine with their own four-cylinder unit of 2.5-litres which, despite having few common parts, was effectively half of the 5-litre V8 that powered the 928. Other significant changes included wider wheel arches, a better equipped, more refined interior and upgrades to the suspension and brakes. From the outset, the model boasted excellent handling - the specification of a rear transaxle endowing the 944 with nigh on 50/50 distribution. The 944 S2 saw the light of day in 1989, by which time the normally aspirated engine had grown via 2.7 to 3.0-litres in capacity. There were now two body styles to choose from – coupe and cabriolet. A total of some 4,000 cabriolets were produced before the 944 model range was superseded by the 968 in 1991.

In summary:

  • A very well-presented seven-keeper, 124,685-mile example
  • Remained in the same enthusiast ownership for the last eight years
  • Comes with model-related cherished number and current MOT
