Spring 2021 Classics & Collectables Auction

  Lot 93

1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am

Chassis No. - 2U87W9N105299

Registration - JPM 520V

M.O.T. - EXEMPT

Odometer – 76,929

Now here’s a car to set the neighbours talking. A lefthand drive second generation Firebird with the optional Trans Am performance/appearance pack, it was apparently imported from the USA in 1988. It has had just two keepers this side of the pond, both of whom have invested time and money in the car. The shell was stripped to bare metal and treated for corrosion, during which the floor pans, front wings and boot floor were all renewed and the bottom of the rear wings patched as required. The rejuvenated body was then hand flatted between numerous coats of primer before being treated to an equally generous number of top coats. Gold stripes and eagle decals adorn the all black body, which is complemented by tan leather interior trim. The car’s mighty 6.6-litre V8 engine has been rebuilt, the brake system overhauled and new General Grabber HP tyres fitted all round. According to the vendor, the rolling restoration project is now almost complete and only requires such items as a new carpet to finish it off. ‘JPM 520V’ rides on what the vendor informs us are rare (only made for one year) 25-spoke alloy wheels and is now being offered for sale complete with its original owners’ manuals, period radio and two sets of keys.

The Pontiac Firebird line ran from 1967 to 2002 and across four generations. It was a pony car designed to compete with Ford’s Mustang and was built on the same platform as its Chevrolet cousin, the equally exciting Camaro. The striking Firebird name had previously been used by General Motors for concept cars of the 1950s and ‘60s.

In summary:

  • Bodywork, engine and other mechanicals all restored
  • Just three UK owners since importation in 1988
  • Boasts 6.6-litres of all-American muscle
