1973 Cox GTM Coupe

Registration – TPP 266L

Chassis No. – SABTVR03437351191

M.O.T. – Exempt

Odometer – 23,040

This is an opportunity to own an extremely rare British sports car – one that was developed as a kit car and based on the ever-popular Mini. An unusual car in any case, this Cox GTM offers even more intrigue, as it is fitted with a Cooper 1071cc engine – a unit only produced for around 18 months, before being replaced by the now more famous 1275cc engine. Its character is prized by the vendor, aiding in the Cox GTM’s enjoyable driving character, as loved by Mini drivers throughout the decades. This GTM is presented with red bodywork and black interior – fitted with new seats – with all aspects of the vehicle described by the current owner as ‘good’ or ‘excellent’; the engine and gearbox are included in the latter. The striking coupe comes with a full history, including the blueprints, and will be sold with a new MOT.

One of the UK’s longest-running kit car designs, the Cox GTM – ‘Grand Touring Mini’ – was designed by Bernard Cox, who presented it at the Racing Car Show in January 1967. The clever design used a steel semi-monocoque, using Mini front and rear subframes, and a glass-fibre body. The Mini engine was fitted to the rear subframe, for a mid-engine lay-out, creating a compact two-seater coupe, with the agility and performance of the Mini Cooper. Cox built 55 cars, before selling the design to Howard Heerey, who continued producing another 170 models until 1971. Since then, the name and designs have passed through a number of owners, though is still available, now through Hambly Sportscars, who bought the design in 2015.
