Odometer – 71,000
This pretty and eye-catching 2001 Mercedes-Benz SLK230 has an odometer reading just 71,000 miles and is described as being in ‘good’ condition throughout. Finished in a gorgeous (and thought to be rare) purple maroon colour, with elegant 16-inch alloys, it presents extremely well indeed. Inside, the black interior is set off by turned aluminium-effect trim, and the SLK’s deeply cowled instruments simply look better and better with age.
‘Y238DJL’ is a rare first-generation SLK with a six-speed manual gearbox, rather than the more familiar automatic. This will make it of particular interest to enthusiasts, and may boost its collectability in the future. The vendor says the car has a full service history: “This vehicle has been cared for and well maintained.” They add that all electrical accessories are in working order and, with the supercharged 2.3-litre engine, “this car drives like a dream”.
The Mercedes-Benz SLK was introduced in 1996 as a more compact alternative to the famed SL; the ‘K’ stands for ‘kurz’, or ‘short’. It was designed by Mercedes-Benz legend Bruno Sacco and became an immediate hit at launch. Its party trick was the innovative folding hard-top roof, which became a trend-setter for other brands. Today, it is fast becoming a modern design classic. The supercharged four-cylinder engine harked back to the 1950s Mercedes-Benz 190SL – and it even shared an identical 94-inch wheelbase. This ‘R170’ generation was replaced by the ‘R171’ in 2004 but, while a bigger and more sophisticated car all round, it lacked the charm of this pretty original.
