Spring 2021 Classics & Collectables Auction

  Lot 95

1987 Mercedes-Benz 420 SE

Chassis No. - WDB1260342A296615
Registration – D805 XGW
M.O.T. – No M.O.T.
Odometer – 111,000

This fine-looking S Class Mercedes formed part of a large, dry-stored private collection of classic cars from May 2016 until recently, since when it has been professionally recommissioned. The work carried out included: new battery and battery tray; replacement engine oil and filter, air filter and spark plugs; brake overhaul including a new caliper. The big Benz is finished in the very pleasing combination of burgundy metallic bodywork and grey velour upholstery, that’s complemented by a polished wood veneer facia and console. As the vendor points out, the bumpers, so often battered and bruised on cars of this size and age, are in excellent order, and he informs us that the car ‘drives superbly’. Registering four former keepers and some 111,000 miles from new, the 420SE is now being sold complete with V5C, clear HPI certificate, a schedule for the works recently completed, and old MOT certificates dating back to 2000 (by when the car had covered 54,797 miles), plus a current one valid for 12 months.

The W126 Series was the second generation of flagship vehicles to bear the S-Class name; which stood for ‘Sonderklasse’ or, in English, ‘Special Class’. The initial line-up of seven Saloon versions was launched at the 1979 Frankfurt Motorshow. Thanks to lighter materials and thorough wind tunnel testing, the newcomers were altogether sleeker and more fuel efficient models than their predecessors. They also showcased a number of Mercedes-Benz safety innovations, including: supplemental restraint systems for the airbags, seatbelt pre-tensioners, and traction control. By 1986, there was a choice of silky-smooth V8 powerplants of 4.2 or 5.6-litres, that drove through a four-speed automatic transmission.

In summary:

  • A handsome example with burgundy bodywork and grey velour interior
  • Recently recommissioned after a period of dry storage
  • Previously part of a private collection of classic cars
