An Auction of Classic and Performance Cars and Motorcycles

  Lot 97

1973 Ford Escort RS Mexico
An exemplary, restored example and arguably a concours contender

Registration - XTE 269L

Chassis No. - BFATNV00069

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 65,558

Period fast Fords are all the rage these days and their increasing values mean we are seeing more and more professionally restored examples coming to market, of which ‘XTE 269L’ is a perfect case in point. Immaculately presented in black-striped Daytona Yellow, it has been rebuilt to standard specification aside of bubble arches filled with suitably fat, Nankang-shod X-Pack alloy wheels. The Escort’s underside is pretty much as clean and tidy as the pristine black cloth interior, and it’s hard to see how the car could have been any better presented. It comes as no surprise then that the most recent of the Mexico’s 15 keepers currently regards the ‘Kent’ engine, four-speed manual gearbox, bodywork, paintwork and upholstery as all being in ‘excellent’ condition. Nor is it hard to imagine it driving away with silverware if entered in concours competitions. The RS is now offered complete with its original AVO plate, a quartet of Cibié Oscar auxiliary lights, and a very credible though unwarranted 66,558 miles on the odometer.

The Ford Escort was launched at the 1968 Brussels Salon. Acutely aware that the Cortina was in the autumn of its competition career, the company’s competition department had been developing a race/rally version of the model throughout 1967, and had the Twin-Cam ready to roll at the same time its standard siblings were finding their way onto the public roads. One of the Escort’s most memorable early competition wins, was Hannu Mikkola’s victory on the 1970 London to Mexico World Cup Rally to capitalise on which Ford created the limited edition, AVO-built Escort Mexico in time for the 1971 season. Its specially strengthened shell was fitted with Rallye Sport suspension and brakes and powered by a 1.6-litre ‘Kent’ engine. The squarer-shaped MKII version had a 1.6-litre Pinto engine in place of the Kent unit.

In summary:

  • A truly immaculate 66,558-mile, 15-keeper example
  • The subject of a meticulous restoration
  • Standard aside of the bubble arches and wide-rim X-Pack wheels
