The Gold Cup Classic & Performance Car & Motorcycle Auction

  Lot 97

1990 Mercedes-Benz 300 E 4matic

Registration - H695 VGP

Chassis No. - WDB1242302B088856

M.O.T. - November 2023

Odometer - 58,000

Properly maintained examples of the W124 family of Mercedes tend to run and run, and this 1990 example shows every sign of having had the love and attention it deserved. VPI Check shows it as having had just one owner from new and the currently indicated mileage of just 57,223 miles seems to be fully borne out by the service and MOT history. It is powered by Mercedes’ straight-six SOHC 3-litre powerplant of the day that boasted an output of 188bhp. In ‘H695 VGP’ this drives through an automatic gearbox to all four wheels, so the Benz could be a useful option for those living a little off the beaten track. Its gunmetal grey paintwork is matched to beige cloth interior trim and it rides on period-correct alloy wheels. The vendor informs us that ‘everything works as it should and that the 300 E is a very nice genuine car’. In summary, he presently considers the engine, transmission, four-door saloon bodywork, paintwork and upholstery to all be in ‘excellent’ order. The car is now available to purchase complete with sunroof, tow pack, headlamp wash/wipe, Blaupunkt audio system, alarm, extensive service history and selection of invoices and old MOTs, plus a current one valid to November 28.

Introduced in 1984, Mercedes’ W124 range was available with petrol engines ranged in size from 2.0 to 5.0-litres and diesel ones from 2.0 to 3.0-litres, while body options comprised saloon, coupe, estate and cabriolet. When announced, the model’s drag coefficient of 0.28 was one of the lowest of any car on sale, and the line-up featured many items of advanced technology – eg single windscreen wiper with eccentric pivot, and an exhaust oxygen sensor. Safety was also a key feature of the model, which was designed to withstand an offset crash into a concrete barrier at 35mph without serious harm to the occupants. Height adjustable seatbelts with pre-tensioners were standard up front and a driver’s side airbag a relatively novel option. In short, the car was arguably way ahead of its time.

In summary:

  • Understood to be a one-owner, 57,223-mile example
  • Combines 3-litre power with automatic gearbox and fourwheel drive
  • Equipped with sunroof, tow hook and Blaupunkt stereo
