November 2021 Classics Auction

  Lot 98

1958 Morris Minor 1000 Convertible
A desirable addition to any collection.

Registration - NSL 540

Chassis No. - FBA11567580

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 26,000

‘Betty’ presents very well. Finished in Snowberry White that’s complemented by green interior trim, the Morris is thought to have started life as a two-door saloon before being turned into a convertible by marque specialist Charles Ware. Evidently the engine and gearbox are original, but the brakes have been upgraded courtesy of a servo and discs in place of the front drums, while the steel rear wings have been replaced with fibreglass ones. In recent times ‘NSL 540’ has been treated to a new mohair hood, carpet, seat belts, and sun visors. The vendor purchased the Minor in June this year for use as a wedding car but, having completed three such celebrations, sadly no longer has suitable storage facilities for the car – hence the sale. She’ describes the Morris as ‘fab to drive, with no issues’ and says she’ll be sad to see it go. It currently displays an unwarranted 26,000 miles from new.

Morris’s Minor is almost as universal a symbol of England as the London bus and the red telephone box and, with over 1.6 million manufactured over a 23-year reign, is one of the most successful cars of all time. Designed by Alec Issigonis (who also penned the ubiquitous Mini), the Minor was unveiled at the 1948 Earls Court Motorshow. It was intended to provide the luxuries and practicality of existing quality motorcars at a price suitable for the ordinary person. The biggest update in its lifetime occurred in 1956, when the engine was increased in capacity to 948cc (the car was now renamed the Minor 1000), the rear window enlarged and the split-screen front one replaced with a single glass.
